[Prefect could set his watch by the time he spends bothering Barron. Today he doesn't actually speak to anyone until he reaches his inmate's cabin, and raps lightly on the door.]

[It takes Barron a while longer to answer the door than usual. When he does, he has his journal in his hand.]

[Prefect's entire face falls into concern, and he lifts a hand, letting it hovver over Barron's shoulder for a moment, before dropping it down again.]

What do you mean? What's wrong, Comrade?

[Barron tosses his journal onto his desk.] When did Cassel become such a teenager?

He's just learning to be his own person, Comrade. Do you remember what you were like at his age?

[Prefect goes to sit down on the edge of Barron's bed, because that's totally where he belongs in Barron's room okay.]

Well, yeah. [Bits of it, anyway.] But I wasn't as bad as he is. He doesn't care about anything any more.

[Barron sat down on the bed next to Prefect.] I don't think he wants to be part of our family.

What do you mean, you weren't as bad? You mean you just did what Philip and your mom wanted you to do?

[He puts one hand on Barron's shoulder, and gives it a little squeeze.] I think he wants your family to stop doing that to each other. Would you really love him any less if you couldn't control him?

He doesn't want anything to do with us. I don't think he even wants to see mom again.

[Which Barron found fairly incomprehensible. He shook his head, but didn't reject Prefect's squeeze.] I don't know. I've never had to think about that before.

He doesn't want you to use him anymore, and he doesn't want to be controlled. That doesn't mean he doesn't want anything to do with you. I mean, Comrade, you and I don't use each other, and you and Dean never used each other, but you were still friends, and we're still friends. Why shouldn't Cassel want you to care about him without wanting you to use him.

[Prefect dips his head a little, still watching Barron.] Well, you have to think about it now, because you don't have a choice about it anymore. You can't control Cassel here, so if that's all you want him for then you're going to be disappointed.

[Barron sighs, before nodding.] It's just hard, man. This isn't something that I ever thought that I'd have to do.
